Geography
Fakarava is an atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. It is
60 km long and 21 km wide. The atoll has a large and deep lagoon. Fakarava is
being classified by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.

Location: 16°18′S 145°38′W.
Toau atoll lies about 14 km from Fakarava.
Area: 16 km² (land) and 1,112 km² (lagoon)

History
The ancestors of the Tahitian royal family Pōmare came
from Fakarava.

July 1820 - Fabian
Gottlieb von Bellingshausen discovered the atoll for Europe. He named it Wittgenstein.
1995 - Domestic airfield was inaugurated.
