Geography
Niau is a small atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. Its lagoon is entirely enclosed and it has an unusual green colour. There is a small airport.
Other names: Fakaau, Greig.
Location: 16°9′15″S 146°21′20.4″W. The Atoll lies about 29 km from Toau, 52 km from Fakarava and 340 km from Tahiti.
Area: 20 km² (land) and 33 km² (lagoon)
Population: 226 (2012)
Largest settlement: Tupana

History
12 February 1606 - Pedro Fernandes de Queirós was probably the first European to visit the atoll. He named it La Decena.
18 July1820 – Russian Admiral Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen rediscovered the atoll. He named it Greig.
In 19th century the atoll was visited many times by European discovers, including Otto von Kotzebue and Jules Dumont d'Urville.
